Cheapest car insurance in Nebraska: how to save without gaps

July 7, 2026

This is a subtitle for your new post

Nebraska is actually a relatively affordable state for car insurance compared to the national average — full coverage here runs about $110 per month, roughly 9% below the U.S. average according to MoneyGeek's 2026 data. But affordable doesn't mean uniform. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive carriers for the same driver in the same ZIP code can run $80 to $100 per month. That's a real difference.

The goal of this guide isn't just finding the lowest premium. It's finding the lowest premium that still gives you the coverage you actually need. There's a version of cheap car insurance that leaves you exposed in ways you'll regret the moment you need to file a claim. This guide walks you through both sides of that equation.

Nebraska car insurance minimum requirements

Nebraska requires every registered vehicle to carry minimum liability coverage of 25/50/25:

  • $25,000 per person in bodily injury liability
  • $50,000 per accident in bodily injury liability
  • $25,000 in property damage liability

Nebraska also requires uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage at the same 25/50/25 minimums. You can't waive it. Nebraska is an at-fault state, which means the driver who causes an accident is responsible for the other party's damages — your liability coverage is what pays when that driver is you.

Minimum coverage for a clean-record driver runs about $33 to $51 per month depending on the data source. The cheapest minimum-coverage option in the state is Farmers Mutual of Nebraska at around $18 per month — note that this is a regional Nebraska insurer, not the national Farmers brand.

The problem with carrying only minimums: a serious accident easily exceeds $25,000 in medical costs for a single person. If you cause a multi-vehicle crash, $50,000 in bodily injury coverage disappears fast. When your policy limit is hit, you're personally on the hook for the rest. Most drivers with any assets worth protecting should carry at least 100/300/100 in liability.

The cheapest car insurance options in Nebraska right now

Based on 2026 data from multiple sources, here are the carriers consistently offering the lowest rates for Nebraska drivers:

Farmers Mutual of Nebraska is the clear price leader. Full coverage averages $67 to $109 per month depending on the analysis, and minimum coverage averages $18 to $26 per month. This is a Nebraska-only regional insurer with strong financials and an established agent network. Not related to national Farmers. The catch: limited customer service data because they don't sell in most other states.

American National comes in at $942 per year for full coverage in NerdWallet's June 2026 analysis and $918 per year in U.S. News data — competitive for a full-coverage driver with a clean record.

Auto-Owners averages $40 per month for liability-only coverage according to Insurify 2026 data and consistently appears near the top of cheapest full-coverage comparisons. Strong customer service scores and claims reputation.

USAA offers the best combination of price and service for military members, veterans, and their families. If you qualify, it should be on every comparison list.

State Farm is a reliable mid-range option with one of the strongest local agent networks in the state. Not always the cheapest, but competitive for drivers who want easy bundling with home insurance and known claims support.

Why independent agents beat direct carriers on price

When you buy car insurance directly from one company — whether through their website or a captive agent — you're seeing that company's rate. You don't know how it compares to what five other companies would charge for the same coverage.

In Nebraska's market, that comparison matters. Farmers Mutual of Nebraska charges $67 per month for full coverage. National Farmers charges $164 per month — a $97 monthly difference for identical coverage. Knowing which regional and national carriers are currently pricing competitively for your specific profile (driving record, credit score, vehicle, ZIP code) requires running those quotes against each other simultaneously.

That's what an independent agency does. We compare your profile across 10+ carriers and come back with the options that actually fit — not just the one our employer told us to sell.

Coverage you should never cut even when price shopping

Uninsured motorist coverage is already required in Nebraska, but the required minimum (25/50/25) may not be enough. Nebraska drivers carry UM at the same level as their liability, which means if you raise your liability limits, your UM limits should follow. Given that roughly 1 in 7 Nebraska drivers carries no insurance or minimal coverage, this protection pays for your injuries when the at-fault driver can't.

Comprehensive coverage is the coverage that pays when your car is stolen, damaged by hail, flooded, hit by a deer, or damaged by fire or vandalism. Nebraska ranks fourth in the nation for tornado frequency at around 57 per year, and hail damage alone generates average claims of $4,500 per vehicle statewide. Dropping comprehensive on a vehicle you couldn't easily replace is a gamble that regularly doesn't pay off.

Medical payments coverage (MedPay) covers your and your passengers' medical bills after an accident regardless of fault. Nebraska doesn't require PIP, and without strong health insurance, MedPay is inexpensive protection against a real gap.

Where it usually makes sense to save: raising your comprehensive and collision deductibles from $500 to $1,000 if you have savings to cover it. Moving from a $500 to $1,000 deductible typically cuts the premium by 15% to 20%.

Factors that affect your Nebraska car insurance rate

Understanding what drives your rate helps you identify where you can actually save:

  • Driving record. Nebraska rates go up an average of 56% after an at-fault accident. A DUI raises full coverage rates by about 85%. Clean driving history is the single most reliable path to lower rates over time.
  • Credit score. Nebraska allows credit-based insurance scoring. Drivers with poor credit pay an average of $395 per month for full coverage versus $110 for good credit. The spread is wider here than in many other states.
  • Vehicle type. A Ford F-150 averages $126 per month for full coverage. A Tesla Model Y averages $211 per month. More expensive vehicles with pricier parts cost more to insure.
  • Location. Omaha reports over 3,000 vehicle thefts annually, which affects comprehensive rates across the metro. Rural areas face different risk profiles but often have faster highway speeds and longer emergency response times, which affects liability rates.
  • Age and gender. Teen drivers pay the highest rates. Rates stabilize in the 30s and generally stay low through the 50s.
